This tin-coated sheet steel was referred to as "tinplate." Sheet metals appeared in the United States in the 1870s, being used for shingle roofing, stamped decorative ceilings, and exterior façades. Sheet steel ceilings were solely popularly generally known as|often recognized as} "tin ceilings" later as producers of the period didn't use the time period.
